Abstract:

Introduction: Dental anxiety and fear in children are one of the major public health concerns. Music therapy and aromatherapy are practical dental treatments. It is effective, cost-effective, and appropriate for pediatric patients who may have anxiety and fear.

Objectives: The aim of this randomized control trial with a 2 x 2 factorial design was to determine the effectiveness of music therapy, combined with aromatherapy, in reducing the anxiety and fear of dental services in young children.

Methods: A total of 128 school-age children aged 10-12 years, studying in grades 4-6 in Thailand were randomly allocated into 4 groups: a control group with 32 volunteers, an experimental group that received music therapy, with 33 volunteers, an aromatherapy experimental group with 31 volunteers, and 32 volunteers in an experimental group with music therapy combined with aromatherapy.

Results: The results found that within-group comparisons before and after the experiment revealed the outcomes with a statistically significant change at the 0.05 level of each group,  as follows: the control group had increased heart rate, the music therapy group had dental anxiety and fear and systolic blood pressure decreased, the aromatherapy experimental group had increased oxygen saturation, and the experimental group receiving music therapy combined with aromatherapy had dental anxiety and fear with decreased heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and increased oxygen saturation values.  In addition, it was found that music therapy combined with aromatherapy had a co-influence on dental anxiety and fear (F = 22.22, P < 0.001) and oxygen saturation (F = 17.40, P < 0.001), and the two main treatments also significantly influenced these outcomes at the 0.05 level.

Conclusion: The results showed that the use of music therapy in combination with aromatherapy reduced school-age children's anxiety and fear of dental services better than a single treatment.

Abstract:

The success of dental implant therapy is no longer judged by osseointegration only, esthetics has become an essential part of oral rehabilitation. Patients seeking implant treatment are not only expecting implant-supporting restoration to be functional long-erm, but also to be esthetic particularly in the anterior zone. For a long time, implant research was focused on the per-implant bone, establishing hard tissue quality and quantity as being the principal criteria for defining success. More recently, emerging evidence suggests that peri-implant soft tissues are key to maintaining peri-implant health, even in the case of missing buccal bone at implant sites.

Based on recent epidemiologic data, the prevention of peri-implant disease (peri-implant mucositis or peri-implantitis) has become a major task in daily practice. These data showed that 30% of all implants and 47% of all patients will experience peri-implant mucositis, and 10% of all implants and 20% of all patients will experience peri-implantitis. The risk factors that are directly or indirectly related to implant failure were identified as esthetic risk factors, timing of implant placement, timing of soft and hard tissue augmentation. The esthetic risk factors (gingival, dental, osseous, and implant factors, provisional restoration) are well reported to have big impact on the esthetic outcomes, in particular when patient selection for success criteria were not applied precisely. Moreover, the skills and the experience of the practitioner are well documented in the literature to have a significant impact on the functional and esthetic outcomes of implants in the esthetic zone.

It is now well documented that in order to avoid any post implant complications and insure patient satisfaction, a proper risk assessment and management of soft and hard tissues at the planned implant site is important prior to any implant-related surgery.

Abstract:

Oral cancer continues to be the most prevalent cancer resulting from the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and other carcinogenic products. In nature more than 95% of the carcinomas of the oral cavity represent squamous cell type. They constitute a major health problem in developing countries including India, representing an increase in mortality rate leading to the cause of death. The survival index continues to be small (50%), as compared to the progress in treatment. The study was done to investigate the Telomere length of isolated DNA by terminal restriction fragment (TRF), Southern blot analysis. In the study a total of 100 samples of tissues from Oral cancer, precancer cases and oral normal mucosa patients were collected to the analyzed telomere length. The mean telomeric length of precancer and cancer patient’s was significantly found to be lower as compared to normal with p < .001. The range and mean of peak TRF length was calculated by using students  and paired t- test. The range of oral cancer samples was calculated to be 3.6 - 11.4 and mean ± SD was 6.4 ± 2.0 while of precancer samples range was 3.1- 11.0 and mean ± SD was calculated to be 6.8 ± 2.2. In normal samples range was 2.8–10.9 and mean ± SD was calculated to be 8.9 ± 2.6. On comparing the telomeric length in specimen at oral precancerous and cancerous stages it was found that telomeric length was found to be shorter in oral cancer than precancer and normal patients. The mean peak TRF length was significantly lower in OSCC and precancer specimens compared with normal (control) specimens with p< .001.

Abstract:

The dental work environment can be a way of transferring diseases. Therefore, infection control in dentistry is a necessity. So far many disinfectants have been made by different companies. Therefore, it is very difficult to select a suitable disinfectant. . The purpose of this study was to compare the different levels of the radiology department in terms of type and number of bacteria and compare the antibacterial effect of two disinfectant solutions used in the department of radiology. In this descriptive-analytical study, the correlation coefficient test was used for statistical analysis.

In this study, samples of the control panel, radiographic head, lightbox, door handle, and working desk of the radiology department were taken. Samples were taken for 4 times each day. Before working hour starts, right after starting the working day, and when the working day finishes, and after disinfecting the environment. 60 samples were taken. In order to compare the type of disinfectant, the ‘Septi Surface’ was used to disinfect in the first two days and the ‘Surfo-Septi” was used to disinfect over the second two days. From 60 samples collected in 15 cases of bacterial colony growth. The overall level of bacteria in some surfaces is high such as the door handle and the working desk. At some surfaces there was a high incidence of infection with Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. Due to the greater contact of patients with the door handle, there was a higher level of infection than on the rest of the surfaces. On the other hand, the radiographic head has less bacterial growth than the other parts due to proper coverage.

Abstract:

In the present scenario, the dentist population in our country has grown many folds and there are very less job opportunities. So the present day dentist has to rely on private practice which is definitely not an easy task, especially because of the mushrooming of ill equipped and low level dental colleges where education is being imparted to students only for the sake of money. The result is that the new crowd which is coming out is definitely not trained and in this competitive era, it’s difficult for them to survive in managing their private practice. This lecture will cover almost all fields of private practice and help a clinician to improve his skills both as a clinician and also as a private practioner and help him grow his practice, both in terms of quality and quantity. This lecture will touch almost all branches of dentistry and also help to improve the patient inflow and overall popularity and income of a dentist. We shall be discussing even small points like staff salary & leave management and their retention.
